PM questions Chavalit's motives

Involving the royal institution in politics is inappropriate, and dissolving the House of Representatives at this time is not the right solution, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday.

Former prime minister and opposition Puea Thai Party leader Chavalit Yongchaiyudh on Monday said he planned to seek an audience with His Majesty the King to end the intensifying political crisis.

"I believe members the public agrees with me that it would not be appropriate to involve the royal institution in politics.

"Many sides doubt the intentions [of Gen Chavalit]," Mr Abhisit said.

The prime minister said Gen Chavalit's statement showed that he could be masterminding all the anti-government activities. The target was beyond a call for a House dissolution.

He asked people to use their discretion when considering Gen Chavalit's plan.

The [prime minister said the government will ensure that the security laws are enforced effectively and that all sides respect the rules and regulations of the country.

"The government will continue working to solve the political problem, but a House dissolution is not the right answer," he said.

The premier said he was confident that support for the red-shirt rally at Ratchaprasong intersection would drop if the people receive truthful information and were aware of the actual situation.

Mr Abhisit reiterated the government's belief there were terrorists among the demonstrators at Ratchaprasong.

"I understand that many sides want an abrupt end to the political stand-off, but the past incidents show that it's not going to be an easy task because officials will have to be more careful.

"The government will do its best to solve the problem quickly," he said.

He asked people from outside Bangkok not to be become the victims of the anti-government group.
