Songkran road toll rises to 257

The number of deaths from road accidents during the Songkran holidays continues to climb as another 45 died and 370 were injured on the fifth day of celebrations.

A total of 257 people died and 3,104 people were injured from 2,863 road accidents during the holiday travels from April 12 to 16, Anucha Mokkhaves, director general of the Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said on Saturday.

Nakho Ratchasima had the largest number of deaths, at 17, followed by Chiang Rai and Ubon Ratchathani with 11 each and Pitsanulok (9).

Nakhon Si Thammarat had the highest number of road accidents, at 116, and the injured people, at 131.
Drunk driving and speeding were major causes of the accidents.
