Suthep doubts police's performance

Police have been ordered to strengthen security measures to prevent clashes between the red shirts of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and local people of Silom business community, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of security Suthep Thaugsuban said on Thursday.

He said the clashes between them on Wednesday night had further marred Thailand's image in the eyes of foreigners.

What happened stemmed from the fact that the Bangkok people could no longer stand the red shirts and vented their anger, Mr Suthep said. However, he plead for them to be more careful in expressing their dissatisfaction.

Mr Suthep also denied the UDD's allegation that the clashes had been orchestrated by the government, saying that it was normal for the Silom community people to have become annoyed by the red shirts who had occupied Bangkok streets for over two months.

The deputy prime minister said he felt the police had not done enough to prevent the clashes and that they were required to readjust their role and show more attention in performing their duty.

Mr Suthep said he wondered why, despite many checkpoints having been set up, police had allowed protesters to bring with them into the rally site a large quantity of bamboo stems and auto tyres to fortify their road blocks.

He said police should have also shown more responsibility in dealing with the red shirts who blocked a freight train carrying military personnel and equipment in Khon Kaen province.

On the attack on an oil depot with a rocket propelled grenade (RPG), Mr Suthep, who is director of the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES), said it was an act of terrorism.
