Internet access restrictions lifted in Uygur

Authorities in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have lifted all restrictions on Internet access imposed after a deadly ethnic riot last July.

An official of the region's government told NHK that the restrictions were lifted on Friday.

China had allowed Internet users in the region access only to government-related websites, to prevent a recurrence of large-scale rioting that resulted from a Uygur protest march. The government said nearly 200 people died in the violence, but Uygurs say the number was much higher.

The lifting of restrictions is seen as reflecting China's confidence about maintaining security in the autonomous region ahead of the first anniversary of the riot.

It's also the latest in a series of steps involving the region that China apparently wants to highlight.

On April 23rd, Chinese Communist leaders met and agreed to boost economic development and maintain long-term social stability in the region.

The next day, the Chinese government announced the removal of Wang Lequan as the region's Communist Party secretary.

Wang had held the region's top post for about 15 years but was denounced by rival ethnic groups, Uygurs and Hans, after the riot. He was also criticized for controlling local businesses and other interests.
