Grenade, bombs at bank, EC chief's home

A house owned by the Election Commission chairman and a branch of Bangkok Bank were targeted with a grenade and small bombs late on Sunday and early Monday, police said.

There were no injuries in the attacks.

An M79 grenade was fired at a Bangkok Bank's Ratchada-Lat Phrao branch late Sunday, but it did not explode. Only glass windows were damaged.

Police said they believe the grenade was fired from a bridge crossing the Ratchadaphisek-Lat Phrao intersection.

There were no security guards at the bank at night, so police were informed of the incident in the morning.

There were 11 closed-circuit television cameras at the bank's branch but none of them was set to record scenes in front of the bank, police said.
Three small bombs were thrown at the house of EC chairman Apichart Sukhagganond in Bang Sue district shortly after midnight, but only one bomb exploded.

Police operations centre spokesman Prawut Thawornsiri said the bombs were made in China, and they have a similar destructive capacity to M67 grenades. This type of explosive is not used by Thai security forces, he said.

He said the bombs damaged water pipes, a tree and the wall of Mr Apichart's house. He and his family had not stayed at the house for a few months now, according to reports.

In the morning, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva urged the Royal Thai Police to find suspects in the two incidents as he was concerned that they could affect the government's reconciliation plan.
